Gold Leaf and Icons

Theotokos of Vladimir by the hand of student Nicole Sample

Please enjoy the images of my students
in the water guilding gold leaf and intermediate iconography workshops at Grunewald Guild in Washington in October. If you are interested in joining us for future workshops please contact me at info@themaryfrances.com  so I can put you on the mailing list for upcoming workshops.

 2 Day Gold Leaf Workshop
Kinga decides on an image and creates a cartoon for her panel.

Britt sands her panel to prepare it for water guilding gold leaf.

Nicole applies gold leaf.

Britt and Kinga add bole to their panels for water guilding. In the foreground, Nicole has completed a layer of gold on her panel.

Diane cuts a sheet of gold leaf for application.

Kinga's Archangel Michael is ready for burnishing.

Nicole burnishes parts of the gold and leaves other sections unburnished.

Britt burnishes.

Diane prepares her panel for egg tempera after gold leafing.

 Britt does tool work.

Then she prepares for the first layers of egg tempera.

Kinga adds first layers to fabric.

Then adds highlights.
 Then more highlights.
Britt starts to add first layers.

St. Alexander

Emory adds gold through the size (glue) method.

And writes a beautiful icon.

Diane adds highlights to the face.

Each student is in various stages of completing their icon and will finish in their own studio.
